A rigorous randomized controlled trial has found that berberine — marketed on social media as "Nature's Ozempic" — produces only 2% weight loss over 12 weeks, far less than the 15-20% achieved by actual GLP-1 drugs.
Trial Results
- 400 overweight adults over 12 weeks
- Berberine group: 2.1% weight loss
- Placebo group: 1.3% weight loss
- Ozempic comparison group: 14.9% weight loss
What Berberine IS Good For
While not effective for significant weight loss, berberine does have evidence for blood sugar regulation in pre-diabetics, cholesterol reduction, and gut health improvement. It just isn't a GLP-1 substitute.
