A validation study published in the Journal of Digital Health has confirmed that the latest generation of consumer wearable fitness trackers can measure heart rate, blood oxygen, and activity levels with clinical-grade accuracy. The study tested devices from Apple, Garmin, and Fitbit against laboratory-standard medical equipment.

Researchers found that heart rate measurements were within 2% of clinical devices during both rest and exercise, while SpO2 readings matched pulse oximeters with 98% accuracy. The findings could pave the way for wearables to be integrated into remote patient monitoring programs.

Physicians remain cautiously optimistic, noting that while the hardware is now reliable, standardized software protocols for clinical data integration still need to be developed.
