A new nutritional analysis has revealed alarming levels of added sugars, artificial dyes, and preservatives in many popular breakfast cereals marketed to American families. Researchers found that some brands contain more sugar per serving than a glazed doughnut.

The study, published in the Journal of Nutritional Science, examined over 120 cereal products and found that 68 percent exceeded recommended daily sugar intake guidelines for children in a single serving.

Dietitians are urging consumers to read labels carefully and consider whole-food alternatives such as oatmeal, yogurt with fresh fruit, or whole-grain toast with nut butter.
