Five of the nation's largest health insurance companies, including UnitedHealthcare, Anthem, and Aetna, have announced a collaborative initiative to establish standardized reimbursement rates for telehealth services across all plan types. The move comes after years of inconsistent virtual care payment policies that frustrated both providers and patients.

Under the proposed framework, telehealth visits for primary care, behavioral health, and chronic disease management would be reimbursed at parity with in-person visits beginning January 2027. The insurers say the standardization will encourage wider adoption of virtual care while ensuring providers can maintain sustainable telehealth practices.

Consumer advocates have praised the initiative but cautioned that implementation details, particularly around specialist consultations and cross-state licensing, still need to be resolved before the framework can deliver on its promise of equitable access.
