The USDA has issued revised dietary guidelines recommending that adults over 40 increase their daily magnesium intake by approximately 15 percent. The updated recommendation comes after a comprehensive review of recent studies linking magnesium deficiency to cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders.

Nutritionists say the change reflects growing evidence that modern diets, particularly those heavy in processed foods, fail to deliver adequate magnesium levels. Foods rich in magnesium include dark leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.

The American Dietetic Association has endorsed the new guidelines and is urging healthcare providers to screen patients for magnesium deficiency during routine checkups, especially those with a history of heart disease or diabetes.
